NORTH EAST crowns it’s best banger

Today, the best sausages in the North East were crowned as part of British Sausage Week, which this year celebrates the nation’s Sausages of Distinction.

Morris Adamson, from Rothbury Family Butchers received a coveted British Sausage Week Banger Award for his Traditional Pork Sausage

Two-star Michelin chef and British Sausage Week ambassador Michel Roux Jr., was on hand to preside over the awards at ‘SMITHS’ of Smithfield in Central London. As well as crowning seven regional winners, the competition also awarded trophies for the best sausages from supermarkets, pubs and brands.

Commenting on the winning sausages, Roux Jr. said: “I’m delighted to be involved in British Sausage Week, and celebrate the best quality sausages from around the country. I have always enjoyed experimenting with classic dishes and ingredients, without compromising on quality – with sausages you can do so much. It’s time to rethink the humble banger and look beyond mash and gravy to give sausages a bit of the Michelin-star treatment – and the sausages in this year’s competition have definitely done that! I’ve been really impressed with the level of quality and taste in this year’s entries and it’s been an honour to award some of the best in the country today.”

Now in its incredible 18th year, British Sausage Week aims to highlight, via its national competition, the sheer range and quality of sausages being produced today. This year sausages are undergoing a revolution. While nearly three quarters of UK households still buy sausages, consumers are stuck for ways to cook them that match the growing demand for gourmet cooking at home. This year, British Sausage Week is encouraging people to ‘go gourmet’ with their bangers and create some delicious recipes using quality British sausages enhanced by contemporary ingredients to revamp the great British banger for 2015.

Around the country, independent butchers and supermarkets alike will be running events and special offers to help us make the most of this great value family food and celebrate British Sausage Week 2015. Plus many local pubs and restaurants put on special sausage themed menus.

Sausage Awards keep coming!

Having won numerous Region, National and International awards for our sausages and burgers, we constantly strive to be at the top of our game. This year again has been no exception. Both shops received rave reviews for sausages entered in the Foodservice Pork Sausage of the year competition with our Heighley Gate shop scooping three Golds, a silver and a bronze whilst our Rothbury shop took five golds, a silver and a bronze too. This is one of the top competitions in the country and to take away such a haul of awards is a massive achievement and one we are very proud of.

Young guns hit the double!

Two of our youngest staff picked up awards at the latest Bpex Roadshow in January.

Callum ( 20 from Rothbury shop ) and Matty ( 21, apprentice at Heighley gate shop ) both entered their own sausage creations at this years regional Bpex roadshow. Up against strong competition from all over the region our two lads did us proud in the Young Sausage maker section both picking up silver awards (90% or above) for their creations. Callum entered his Pork,jalapeno lime & ginger and Matty entered his Roast Pork & cider chutney sausage. Both just missing out on reaching the final in London. Next year lads!

International Awards for Rothbury Family Butchers!

Rothbury Family Butchers once again gained International recognition last week when we won 3 Silver awards and 2 bronze for products entered in the meat expo competition in Kortrijk Belgium

Considering only 6 gold awards were given out in the whole competition this is a huge achievement for Rothbury Family Butchers!

Award winning sausages were Traditional Pork sausage, Pork and mango Chutney, Pork,cranberry & Stilton, Beef,Tomato & Chilli, Cragside Cracker and Venison,Dark Chocolate & Chilli.

International Recognition for RFB!

Rothbury Family butchers gained International recognition last week when we won 3 Golds Awards and 2 Silvers for products entered in the meat expo competition in Kortrijk Belgium.

Four sausage types were entered along with one Burger. The winning products were the Cragside Cracker Sausage ( Gold Award ), Simonside Sizzler Sausage ( Gold Award ), Northumbrian Sausage ( Gold Award ), Pork,Ginger & Spring Onion Sausage ( Silver )and Red Onion Steak Burger ( Silver Award ). Four judges were allocated to each product and the average score taken. One judge even gave the Northumbrian Sausage 100 out of 100!

Another massive achievement not only for RFB but we would like to think Rothbury as a whole. Customers can now continue to shop at a shop not only with National recognition but now International!

Cragside Cracker crowned the Champ!

THE NORTH EAST OF ENGLAND CROWNS ITS LANDMARK BANGER Rothbury Family Butchers reigns supreme at British Sausage Week The North East of England has found its Landmark Banger! Morris Adamson from Rothbury Family Butchers was crowned regional winner with his Cragside Cracker sausage by legendary cricket umpire and national icon Dickie Bird MBE.

The competition marks a week of activity to celebrate British Sausage Week 2008. Morris, who was one of many outstanding entrants, won the regional heat with his sausage inspired by traditional ingredients including rosemary and red onion. He won a prestigious Banger Award and received £150 to donate to the British Sausage Week charity, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Dickie Bird MBE has led this year’s search for Britain’s Landmark Bangers.

This years ‘King of the Sizzle’ has been travelling the country all week tasting a plethora of regional ‘specialities’ and crowning the best in each region. Commenting on Morris’s winning sausage, Dickie Bird said: “the standard of entries has been so high this year that it was truly difficult to pick just one winner. Having said that, the winning sausage was absolutely delicious, and truly is a Landmark Banger for the North East”

Morris said: “I was really surprised and delighted to win. I never imagined I’d get this far when I submitted my entry a few weeks ago. It was great to meet Dickie and be a part of British Sausage Week 2008 – I’ve had a fantastic time!”

Organised by The British Sausage Appreciation Society, British Sausage Week celebrates the taste, quality and diversity of the sausage, of which there are some 400 individually named varieties in Britain alone.

Sausage wins the Double!!!

Rothbury Family butchers achieved what no other Butcher in the country has achieved by winning two categories in the the Food service pork sausage of the year Competition this week.

This competition is probably one of the most passionately fought food competitions in the world.

With entries totalling over 400 products each year the competition has grown into one of the most prestigious landmarks in any foodie’s diary.

Sausage makers all over Britain send in their weird and wonderful creations as well as the standard pork sausage to see if their recipes make it through to the final. The competition is spilt into 5 categories Traditional Pork, Speciality Pork, Reduced Salt/Fat Pork, Best Pub Sausage, and Best High Volume Sausage. All sausage entered is judged by top food industry experts and given marks accordingly. Rothbury Family Butchers entered 6 types of sausage and received 3 Gold’s (95% or above), 2 Silvers and a Bronze. Not only did all their products pick up awards but The Traditional Pork Sausage and the Sweet Chilli Sausage were judged best overall in their categories.
Proprietor Morris Adamson said “nowadays to win any gold in competitions is amazing as they’re only given out to products scoring 95%or above but to get three and take two overall titles is unbelievable for us! “ “Especially in the traditional Pork section as this is the Holy Grail for butchers.Im sure if you go into any butchers across the country they will make a Traditional pork sausage. So to be judged the best in the competition is overwhelming”
These results were even more special as no other Butcher in the country has taken two titles in this competition before. Morris travelled to the butcher’s hall in London for an awards lunch last Friday to pick up the awards.

After receiving his two silver salvers, certificates and two bottles of champagne Morris added “As I’m tee-total the staff can share the champagne! But I will find pride of place in the shop for the awards”

There may be more awards to follow as next month two more of the shops sausages (Cragside Cracker and Simonside Sizzler) have reached the regional final of Britain’s Landmark Banger Competition and Morris has been invited to a restaurant in Newcastle to have them cooked along with the other finalists to be judged by legendary cricket umpire Dickie Bird in conjunction with British Sausage week. Later in the month Morris and his wife Maria are off to the capital again for an awards luncheon in London where celebrity Ready Steady Cook Chef Lesley Waters will be presenting the couple with no fewer than Eleven Smithfield awards.

Rothbury Family Butchers scooped a Whopping 7 Smithfield Awards at this years product evaluation.These awards are some of the most prestigious in the meat industry.

4 Gold Awards ( 95% or above! ) were arwded to our Cragside Cracker Sausage, Pork and Chestnut Sausage, Pork, Orange and Cranberry Sausage and our Cragside Turkey Roast ( Turkey breast stuffed with our cragside cracker sausage meat topped with sprigs of Rosemary and slices of red Onion.)

1 Bronze ( Pork Ginger and Spring Onion sausage.)

The Gold Award winning products are now in line for a Diamond Award. The Diamond winners will be revealed at an Awards Luncheon at The Butchers Hall in London in November. We are sending Paul down to the luncheon ( Hosted by Celebrity chef Ed Baines ) so fingers crossed!
